Productive kick-off meeting of ALTERNATIVE advisory board
On 17th December, the kick-off meeting of the ALTERNATIVE advisory board took place online. The purpose of the advisory board is to provide advice on the direction and implementation of ALTERNATIVE’s work and on effective ways for using the ALTERNATIVE platform.

Three of the four current advisory board members participated: Prof. Vincenzo Calderone from the University of Pisa, Dr. Isabella de Angelis from the Italian National Institute of Health, and Prof. Georges Kass from the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA. The four Advisory Board members, including Dr. Nicole Kleinstreuer from the NTP Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods in the US, represent a broad set of expertise, from toxicology and pharmacology to public health and regulation.
After short personal introductions, ALTERNATIVE project coordinator Prof. Gianluca Ciardelli from Politecnico di Torino gave an overview on the ALTERNATIVE project. This presentation triggered a productive discussion between the advisory board members and the consortium representatives on technical and regulatory aspects of ALTERNATIVE’s work. In the discussion, the advisory board members provided useful advice and appreciated the importance of ALTERNATIVE, particularly for the regulation of potentially cardiotoxic chemical substances.
The next meeting of the ALTERNATIVE advisory board is planned to take place in spring 2022.
