Project ALTERNATIVE at the 58th edition of EUROTOX Congress
The EU-funded Project ALTERNATIVE took center stage at the EUROTOX Congress 2024, themed “Toxicology – A Quest for Safe Chemicals and Medicines.” The event brought together experts to explore critical topics such as drug and environmental chemical safety, emerging technologies, personalized medicine, and the health impacts of chemical exposure, including those linked to climate change.

Project ALTERNATIVE Technical Coordinator Federico Vozzi, from CNR-IFC (National Research Council Institute of Clinical Physiology), Pisa, Italy, presented on:
“New Approach Methodologies for Cardiac Toxicity Assessment: The ALTERNATIVE Perspective.”
His presentation highlighted the project’s cutting-edge work, including:
- Integrating epidemiological and toxicological findings into a new cardiac Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP).
- Developing a bioengineered cardiac tissue model with integrated physical stimuli for advanced testing.
- Evaluating the molecular pathways of chemicals and their cardiotoxic effects.
- Integrating data into in-silico models for precise cardiotoxicity evaluation.
- Developing comprehensive cardiotoxicity risk assessment frameworks to enhance safety.
Alexandra Schaffert, Researcher from Medical University of Innsbruck contributed to a workshop on Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs), presenting systematic methods for their development and the utilization of emerging tools and technologies.
